This intimidating horse bust by Danish "Brutalist" artist Willem deGroot contains his copper leaf-shaped metal signed tag near the bottom of the mane shown in pictures. As soon as I saw this piece, I knew it was SPECIAL! With it's jagged eye openings, you feel as though you can see into the animals soul, eerily drawing you in. It's so hard to explain the emotions it evoked in me. I came back to it over and over even after I had told the person at the shop that I definitely wanted to purchase it. After leaving with the sculpture, that evening, I decided to do some research on the sculpture and its artist. This piece seems to have been made sometime in the 70s. Brutalism is a subset of Minimalist "a style in art and especially architecture using exaggeration and distortion to create its effect (as of massiveness or power)" deGroot said "I am a sculptor. "Found Objects" is the medium I like to work in. This happenstance method of acquiring materials makes for interesting and eclectic art. The hunt for possible treasures found in salvage yards, thrift stores, and everywhere else in my surroundings. To come upon "the object" ignites a spark that sets me on a most exciting journey." In scouring the internet, I have only seen 2 other similar busts online and very few animal sculptures. I thought it was pretty ironic that I found his sculpture in a thrift shop and then saw that he aquired his materials in salvage yards, THRIFT STORES, and everywhere else in his surroundings.
