Notes: William Adams (17xx-1805) from which Adam’s Jasper Ware originated is descent of a long lineage of established potters dating back centuries. Wealthy from this trade at birth it is thought that William was sworn apprentice to Josiah Wedgwood and it is extensively documented that the two had a close and confidential personal relationship both working on their own Jasper Ware formulas as well as sharing these and experimenting together. It is recorded from early on that the success of Wedgwood’s Jasper Ware was a direct result of Adams’ improvements on his formula in areas of both colour and stability when Adam’s was still working at Wedgwood. “Adams Blue,” the deep almost violet blue jasper ware, also used at Wedgwood, was an Adams contribution and Adams personally designed and executed some of the finest pieces at his friends factory. Thus, Adam’s Jasper Ware is not derivative of but considered its own independent discovery.
