Vintage from the 1950s
Materials: mother of pearl, gold tone metal, glass
This is an exceptional demi parure made by Hattie Carnegie in the 1950s. This set is rare and collectible.
The necklace consists of four strands of genuine mother of pearl beads that are graduated in size. Between the beads are textured gold tone spacer beads. The mother of pearl strands are quite substantial and have a very nice weight to them.
The necklace's clasp is incredibly well designed and very beautiful. It consists of a large glass cameo depicting a Roman soldier in profile. He is in full regalia, including a wonderful lion crest on his shoulder. This lion possibly represents the Legio XIII Gemina, or Thirteenth Twin Legion, the legion with which Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon on January 10, 49 BC. It is quite possible that this cameo depicts Julius Caesar. The features are beautifully modeled and quite regal. The cameo is framed in gold tone filigree metalwork, with a tongue and groove clasp.
The necklace is signed "Hattie Carnegie" on the reverse of the clasp in the signature oval cartouche.
The cameo clasp can be worn traditionally behind at the nape of the neck, or on the side as depicted, which looks beautiful.
