Typically, an item is considered vintage once it has reached 40 years old. This is the industry standard. Per the standard, I do not consider items made in the 1990s-2000s to be true vintage in any circumstance. I feel that labeling them as such does a disservice to both sellers as well as buyers. Sellers have to contend with an overabundance of 25 year old "vintage" items, and less knowledgeable buyers might not know the difference. Your 90s toy or Y2K dress may be super cool, but they're not vintage yet!
An item is considered antique once it has reached 100 years old.
Anything listed as retro or vintage-style/vintage-inspired is something newer made in the style of an earlier time. Retro has also come to mean items that are considered nostalgic, but not yet vintage; i.e., at least 20, but fewer than 40 years old. For clarity's sake, I use retro in the first sense only.
I have over 25 years' experience collecting and selling vintage items. I am very thorough and honest when it comes to describing the items I sell, and will always give as much information on the age/year made as possible.
