In 19th century Japan, people navigated dark paths and roads during the night using small collapsible paper “pocket lanterns.” Also known as Japanese Paper Chochin Lanterns. I am unsure of the exact age but seems very old. The rice paper has a couple of tears here and there but still able to expand and contract without damaging. When fully expanded out measures about 10" x 4" in diameter. I tried researching online and unable to image match the images shown on the lantern. Also I an unable to translate the writing. Depicts a character of some kind carying something with a tall skinny palm looking tree. Very unique.
