faceted_beauty @charlielam Materials such as stone, shell, coral, Gutta-percha, bog oak, ivory, lava, or mother-of-pearl are most commonly used. Due to age, dated around 1920 from estate, I’m not sure exactly what it’s carved/made from but did do the pin test. It has the sharp facial features you want to see, especially in nose region. When the noses are rounded and not sharp it’s a tell-tale sign of cheap material. Since the back is covered with gold you cannot put up to light to see more detail...

faceted_beauty @charlielam Indeed it could be which it quite common in Victorian age pieces! Could call on your friends part. I have been told by my friend who is into cameos dated it late 1800’s to early 1900’s. She showed me a similar piece from an auction house, the name slips my mind at this moment. I know it to definitely not be over 1920’s.
