Molcajete

A molcajete is a bowl-shaped grinding stone used with a pestle called a tejolote to crush and grind ingredients in Mexican cuisine. The word molcajete comes from the Nahuatl word molcaxitl, and the tool dates back to pre-Columbian times. Molcajetes are often made from volcanic stone, such as basalt, which is known for its durability, ability to retain heat and moisture, and porous surface that holds food particles and spices. The rough surface of the stone creates a natural grinding surface that improves over time as tiny bubbles in the basalt are ground down. approximately 8.75" diameter across top 5" high
