This replica of a pre-Columbian Mayan effigy depicts a ruler wearing a Cape that is bedecked with gems. It was handmade In Mexico in modern times, using ancient forms and techniques. Some of these pieces were made to deceive tourists, who would pay a premium to purchase "authentic ancient" pottery, while some are made as simple tourist ware and sold as such, and yet others are made from a sense of national and cultural pride, intended to display the link between modern Mexican culture and its ancient Native roots.
Regardless the reason behind the making of this piece, it is well-made and shows great skill on the part of the potter. It has also been well-kept, with the only obvious wear being around the edges of the base. Overall it is in almost-new condition.
