These hard-to-find canisters were made in Japan by an unknown manufacturer as part of a larger kitchen set. The "made in Japan" marker indicates that they could have been made as early as the late 1800s and as late as the mid 1900s, excluding the Nippon years. They most likely date from the depression years.
As was common at the time, uranium oxide was added to the glaze as a colorant and to make the glaze harder, and thus more durable to withstand transport. With the modern availability of black lights, uranium glass and glazes are more appreciated for their neon-green glow in ultraviolet light. These also have uranium glaze on the interior. (Glazed ceramics glow best under a 365nm light.)
These cute little cottages have thatched rooves with dormer windows and chimneys on the lids, and the four sides feature windows, a front door, a back door, and shrubbery. They are labeled "Cloves", "Ginger", and "Cinnamon".
The larger set (not included) was made with canisters of varying sizes, an orange reamer, and a tea pot. Every now and then a piece of the set will show up online, and If you can find these other pieces, you'll have an entire village!
One roof has a crack on one side. Otherwise these are in excellent shape!
